Fogged out of the Caldera

Fogged out of the Caldera Short post tonight. A little bit because I’m tired, mostly because it was another day at Sea. Last night, we had had hopes that we would be able to sail around a place called (dun dun) DECEPTION ISLAND DECPTION ISLAND

ISLAND

island……

A still active volcano and like, the only one in Antarctica. Last erupted innnnnnn….1972? 1969.

They told us, we could sail into the Caldera of the volcano (because it filled with seawater and is a great natural harbor and you can see steam) But

Nature had other plans. After the beautiful day yesterday, fogged moved in, and the Captain told us this morning that he had visibility up to 100ft. That’s it. And when I woke up, I could believe it. It was better than 100, but it was definitely Gray. So – we were in the general area of Deception Island, but we wouldn’t be able to navigate the narrow channel that would let us visit the Island. And, because of the fog, we didn’t even get to see this Island. We got to sail right past it, waving in a vague direction because did he say it was Southeast? Northeast? East? West? (I’m exaggerating a little bit…) Bummer. Especially since it has the remains of whaling boats, abandoned and no longer operational, but it’s such a neat part of history! So, Shoop. Bye Deception Island. Bye Antarctica. We’re swinging around, heading back to the Drake Passage. The trip is almost over. I attend a few lectures, get a massage. It’s another Gala/reception and we got to cheer for the amazing Cruise Staff (don’t worry, at least I’ll cheer for them with a tip. Not sure if we have anyone who would pull that BS on the ship. But they were amazing and deserve love.) I chatted with Rodrigo, one of the Naturalists on board the team during the day, talked D&D and weird organism stuff with him. yeah. I love being on the boat, and I love the lectures. The waves are getting a bit annoying, but it’s the Drake for ya. And it’ll be the Drake tomorrow.
